About my interpreting experience

I have been interpreting and translating for almost thirty years and always do my best to make communication as smooth and fluent as possible. I have extensive experience with the variants of Spanish as spoken especially in Latin America and with interpreting in all kinds of settings. As an interpreter/translator, I have always been self-employed while I have done my journalism work partly in permanent employment and partly as a self-employed person. Those permanent jobs were with Associated Press and with Radio Nederland Wereldomroep. In recent years I have been 100% self-employed again.

About me (place of birth, native language, other details)

My native language (called A language) is Dutch and Spanish is my second language, or B language. I speak Spanish at a near-native level. After high school (the Gymnasium Erasmianum in Rotterdam where I chose an extreme alpha package: 6 languages history) I studied General and National History at Leiden University. During that study I had several jobs and internships in journalism and a museum. When I finished my studies (in 1988), I continued to work as a journalist but quickly took another course: Spanish interpreter/translator at the Institute Vertol. By now I had understood what an interpreter/translator does and I suspected it would suit me. I completed that training in 1992 with the then state examination. From then on I worked as an interpreter/translator as well as doing journalistic and editorial work.

Credentials

I have taken the former state exam for both interpreting and translating Spanish. In addition, I am always continuing my education (Continuing Education) in various aspects of criminal law civil law and interpreting skills, among others. I have taken a number of courses and training in recent years including the minor in Civil Law at ITV; various day courses in criminal law at SIGV; training for interpreters at KTV Kennisnet; and a course in Final Editing at De Edactie. I have also taken a number of courses in creative writing (which as yet have not resulted in tangible results - but as a well-known philosopher said, "I've never done it before so I guess I can do it") and have been on a study tour to Colombia.
