General work instruction for individually supervised exams with an interpreter
- The interpreter must allow for preparation time. Good preparation is important to properly understand the CBR exam. This includes reviewing the test matrices, the terminology list and background information – all available on the CBR website.
- The exam takes place at a CBR exam centre, in the exam room or in a separate individual room.
- The interpreter identifies himself or herself with a valid identity document.
- The interpreter stores personal belongings in a locker.
- The interpreter and the candidate do not know each other and have no contact before the exam.
- The interpreter sits at a sufficient distance from the candidate so that the candidate’s monitor is not visible.
- The staff member may use an explanation card. The interpreter translates only what the staff member indicates.
- The staff member reads aloud (dividing the text and answer options into logical sections) and the interpreter translates.
- Before the exam questions begin (after the information/explanation), the candidate is asked whether he or she can understand the interpreter properly.
- There is no conversation between the candidate and the interpreter. All questions go through the staff member.
- If the candidate wants to hear the question or the answers again, he can indicate this. As long as time is still running, this may be repeated.
- Text on the (sub)signs is not translated.
- In exam modules with a total time limit, the candidate determines the pace and order and has the option to mark questions.
- The staff member points out the total time per module and monitors whether all questions have been covered within the module time.
- If all questions have been answered, the marked questions have also been reviewed, and there is still time left, the candidate may look at the questions again until the exam time for that module has ended. Upon request, a question may be read aloud or translated again.
